Naruse's explanation of his sexuality and sexual orientation was so nuanced and touching in this story. His sense of who he falls in love with does not translate into identifying with a community, but also doesn't come across as internalized homophobia. It's just complex and he lives with the dissonance of how his internal sense of desire/relationships does not match how he/they are perceived externally, which is a pretty queer thing itself.
